CHAPEL HILL, N.C., October 20, 1998. A recently-completed study of Pennsylvania commercial sector electric utility customers quantifies the rewards and risks of marketing to customers in competitive electric utility markets. Study results show that significant profits can be achieved but that traditional customer characteristics such as number of employees, kWh and kW are not useful predictors of customer profit. Profit variation, even within a single business segment, is large; for instance, a retail store customer with annual energy use of 1,500 - 2,000 MWH is just as likely to net a $10,000 annual electricity sales profit as to return a $10,000 annual loss. Study results show that analysis of individual customers from the MAISY Pennsylvania Utility Customer Database permits energy suppliers to identify profitable customers with as much as 96% accuracy.
