Regulated Utility Applications
Jackson Associates has been providing state-of-the-art utility models and
forecasting support to electric and gas utilities for more than 25 years.
Energy and demand forecasts, hourly load forecasts, DSM and integrated resource
planning and new technology analysis represent a few of these modeling
applications.
MAISY While regulated utilities have customer billing data and some hourly
load data from load research samples, this customer information, by itself,
is too limited to support much of the analysis required in today's regulated
markets. MAISY Utility Customer Databases and Products along with utility
customer data provide an extensive source of customer information and analysis
for:
-
Pricing analysis
-
Customer profitability assessments
-
New product development
-
Distributed resource planning
-
Energy service assessments
-
Customer information systems
-
Energy and hourly load forecasting models
-
Revenue and cost management systems

Energy and
Hourly Load Forecasting Models - MAISY Forecast Models provide traditional
kWh, peak demand and natural gas use as well as additional detail available
with MAISY utility customer databases. Monthly and 8,760 energy use and
hourly load profiles for electric and gas, end-use energy by user-defined
market subsets, information on fuel choices, end-use technologies and other
variables are also provided. Annual, 8760 and monthly forecasts are provided
through 2020.Jackson Associates provides state-of-the-art econometric, end-use
and agent-based microsimulation models to meet forecasting and analysis needs
of individual utilities.
Utility
Customer Databases provide energy use information, including 8,760
hourly electric and thermal loads for utility customers in every service
area in the US and all provinces in Canada.
Other
MAISY data products support targeted information gathering and analysis.
Customer Load Profiling -
Metering technology is too expensive to install interval meters for all
customers; however, MAISY customer load profiling models can expand existing
utility billing data to include full 8,760 hourly load data for each customer
record in the utility's billing file. 8,760 hourly load profile data from
MAISY Service Area Databases are used along with statistical and engineering
models and historical weather and billing data to determine hourly loads
for customer heating, air conditioning and baseloads for electricity (and
natural gas if the gas billing data are available) for each of the utility's
industrial, commercial and residential customers. This detailed hourly load
data is used as the basic source of customer information for each of the
analysis areas identified above.
Customer load profiling is the most important first step that regulated
utilities can take in developing the detailed customer information required
to address regulated market issues. Jackson Associates provides customer
8760 load data capabilities as an inhouse system or as a turnkey service.
Customer Profit Scoring
- Each utility customer's contribution to regulated utility "profits" is
determined with 8760 customer load profiles developed from MAISY customer
load profiling models, information from the utility's recent cost of service
studies, and system lambda information with MAISY customer profitability
analysis software. Identifying revenue and cost of service contributions
of individual customers provides customer intelligence required to reduce
losses incurred by the least profitable customers and to extend profits provided
by more profitable customers.
(We define the term regulated utility customer "profits" as revenue minus
cost of service even though, technically utilities do not earn profits. This
focus is helpful because it reinforces the fact that utility revenue net
of cost is based on the sum of the difference in individual customer revenue
and individual customer cost of service).
Customer Information System
Development - Jackson Associates works with clients integrating all available
customer data resources to develop comprehensive inhouse customer information
systems.
New Product Development
- New product development requires detailed information on customer
characteristics, equipment, and operating and building characteristics as
well as information on customer behavioral characteristics and preferences.
Electric Utility Service Area Databases provide this customer information.
DG Analysis - Distributed
generation (DG) technologies provide onsite electric generation and waste
heat which supplement building space heating, water heating and even air
conditioning energy use. Utility DG offerings provide unique marketing and
economic benefits when targeted to appropriate customers.
MAISY DG products provide information
and analysis capabilities required to convert DG revenue threats into profit
opportunities.
Revenue
and Cost Management - Electric Customer Revenue and Cost Management
(RCM) applies a strategy pioneered in the airline industry to reduce costs
and increase revenue in both regulated and competitive electricity markets.
Jackson Associates Revenue and Cost Management Systems immediately reduce
costs and increase revenue by focusing on individual customer cost of service,
demand response programs and other options with a quantitative
revenue maximizing and cost minimizing process.
